Manismare (甘美な夢魔 (マニスメア) Manisumea, kanbinamuma, lit. sweet nightmare) is an artwork created by the original Hikari.[1] She was broken by him shortly after the failed creation of the Black Wings, and her pieces were later used to create a new artwork by his apprentice.

Emiko Niwa tries to find this lost artwork for Dark to steal but could not find any remaining connection to it except through the piece named Defective.

An entrance to Manismare's realm resides in Azumano Middle School, invisible to most inhabitants but still a source of mystery for students.[2]

Appearance

Manismare's artwork is comprised of a protective scroll case similar to a mezuzah and a semicircular stand that it rests upon. The scroll case is locked and engraved with intricate designs that match the stand.

Her human form has long black hair that reaches her ankles with thick braids on either side. She wears a black veil with a white diamond trim that is tied by strings in the back. Her dress also black and covers her arms and legs. She has a teardrop earring on both ears. She has two flat horn-like structures on the top of her head that extend outwards and contain intricate designs. When she appears before Dark, her face is cracked and flaking apart.

The design on her door in Azumano Middle School resembles a hamsa and has a large star in the center. Inside her realm is a pale labyrinth of stairs, columns, floating blocks, and paths that extend horizontally and vertically in every direction seemingly endlessly. The doors in her realm lead to dream worlds that mimic a person's memories.

Personality

History

Created before work began on the Black Wings, Manismare was once called a "beautiful work of art" by her creator. From her place on a table in his studio, she watched as Hikari worked on his greatest masterpiece and longed to see what it would become. Some time after Niwa interfered with the ritual to infuse life inside the Black Wings, Hikari used Manismare's labyrinth to lock Dark away. However, she retained her curiosity towards him and set the rogue artwork free.

Enraged at her betrayal, Hikari smashes her artwork against the ground. His apprentice collects her pieces and attempts to create an artwork with her, however the creation is deemed a failure and named Defective. She is trapped inside Defective, who feeds off of her residual magic and life.

When Dark is trapped inside Defective's locket by said artwork, she calls out his name from somewhere within. As he wanders the labyrinth, he recognizes her immediately despite her veiled appearance. They haven't seen each other since she freed him from her prison.

She removes her veil and reveals that she has been broken beyond repair. Dark hugs her and attempts to kiss her in order to transfer some of his own magic into her, however she places a hand on his lips and refuses. When he calls her a "beautiful work of art" she smiles warmly, remembering when her creator said that about her. As she shatters further, Dark and Satoshi watch solemnly.

Manismare lays out Dark's situation for him: he is an artwork and Daisuke Niwa is a human. The boy will leave him behind eventually.

When Satoshi Hiwatari breaks Defective, he removes all unwanted parts inside and repairs his unnatural connection to Manismare. According to him, her existence had become corrupted and decayed to the point that their roles switched and she was a parasite upon Defective. Dark happily speaks up to where her spirit lingers, stating that the Hikari has given her a new life. She smiles back.

Trivia

Manisumea マニスメア likely has an English name due to the use of katakana and the prevalence of such artwork names in the series. However, no official translation or romanization has been provided. "My Nightmare" is one interpretation. English fans sometimes refer to her as Manisumea and Manismare.
